Celebrating with (only) you

Celebrating with (only) you was developed for A Sense of Occasion, a Melbourne Design Week exhibition curated by Thomas Maxam Studio exploring ritual, gathering and the objects that shape meaningful moments. Rather than responding to a traditional client brief, the project became an opportunity to examine celebration itself, specifically the deliberate act of outwardly celebrating those closest to us.

Designed as both a functional object and emotional gesture, the piece transforms familiar rituals surrounding champagne into something more expressive, intimate and theatrical. The work speaks to collectors, design-conscious audiences and individuals drawn to objects that heighten experience through emotion, ceremony and use.

The object is formed from a singular ribbon of natural mill-finish aluminium, rolled and brazed to maintain its seemingly free-flowing, gravity-defying form. The surface is orbital sanded and finished with wax, preserving the material’s industrial honesty while introducing warmth, texture and softness.

Celebrating with (only) you was designed and fabricated entirely in-house by Lachlan Mackay at Space-man Studio in Brunswick, Melbourne. Every stage, from concept development through to fabrication and finishing, was completed by the designer, reinforcing a hands-on practice where material exploration and making remain central to the outcome.

Important Note:

Space-man Studio pieces are shaped by the materials they are made from and the environments they live in. Over time, metal, timber, fabric, glass, coatings and other finishes will develop subtle changes in tone, texture and character. Light, touch, atmosphere and everyday use all contribute to the evolving surface and feel of the piece. These natural variations are intentional and speak to the honesty of the materials and the way each object is made and lived with. Material variation is not a defect. It is a defining part of the work and its relationship with your space.
