Second Subject
Second Subject was developed for Synthesis, a Melbourne Design Week exhibition curated by Ruby Shields that looked at exploring colour, texture, craft and the emotional power of interior composition. Rather than responding to a traditional commercial brief, the project became an opportunity to expand the design language established through First Subject, exploring how a familiar structure could evolve through scale, material expression and collaboration.
Designed by Veronica Paiva and Lachlan Mackay under their collaborative practice Subject Matters, the piece was created for audiences drawn to collectible design, interiors and objects that encourage emotional connection through materiality and use. The project explores furniture not only as functional utility, but as part of a broader interior atmosphere where texture, composition and presence shape experience.
The bench combines stained hardwood timbers, varied timber inlays, steel and upholstered textile elements. Contrasting timber species were intentionally selected to celebrate natural variation in grain, colour and texture, allowing the material composition to feel layered, expressive and collected over time. A subtle steel support element introduces both structure and visual restraint, balancing the warmth and richness of the surrounding materials.
Second Subject was fabricated locally in Melbourne through a hands-on and highly collaborative process between the designers and fabricators. The project prioritised iterative development, material sampling and direct engagement with fabrication methods, allowing the final outcome to remain closely connected to process, experimentation and craft.

Important Note:
Space-man Studio pieces are shaped by the materials they are made from and the environments they live in. Over time, metal, timber, fabric, glass, coatings and other finishes will develop subtle changes in tone, texture and character. Light, touch, atmosphere and everyday use all contribute to the evolving surface and feel of the piece. These natural variations are intentional and speak to the honesty of the materials and the way each object is made and lived with. Material variation is not a defect. It is a defining part of the work and its relationship with your space.
